Week one Polls

with 3 comments

Its Tuesday and the for week of College Football polling is complete.  Lets go down the list.  Keep in mind this is all based on the AP Top 25.  Number #1 and #2 being Florida and Texas are unchanged mainly because they totally decimated their opponents which was expected of them both.  Moving on to USC who moved up one spot from #4 to #3 to replace Oklahoma who we will get to later.  Alabama as expected moved up to #4 but as stated by Austin in a previous post the shock was that they somehow were warranted to steal 2 first place votes from Florida even though they took the whole game to open up against the Hokies of Virginia Tech.  Oklahoma State moved up 4 spots to take the number 5 spot in the polls which is a good place to be sitting but I am almost certain that will change with a loss here or there when it is all said and done.

Ole Miss moved from 8 to 6 after their win over memphis, a game that was supposed to highlight Jevon Snead as a dark horse in the Heisman race.  Watching Snead made me think he is definitely better than most people give him credit for but the consistency that is needed to win the Heisman has yet to be shown this season.  He had a bittersweet night throwing 12 of 22 with 7 of those receptions coming in the 2nd half and both of his 2 TD’s coming in the 2nd half of the 4th quarter not to mention the 2 picks that he had in the game.  Penn State went to work on Akron and came away with a win that moved them from #9 to 7.  Ohio State was the only team in the top 10 to move down with a win after narrow defeating Navy.  They dropped a couple spots from 6 to 8.  The big surprise in the Top 10 is BYU they jumped 11 spots after pulling out a neutral field come from behind victory over an undermanned Oklahoma team.  I dont want to sound like a BYU hater but moving up into the Top 10 teams in the nation seems to be a bit hasty.  Sure BYU is a good team all around and they have a great QB by the name of Max Hall with a marvelous Tight End named Dennis Pitta but Top 10? really?  I suppose the next few weeks will show if BYU is the real deal when they have to play Florida state and @ Tulane.  Not to mention later on when they have to play conference games like TCU and Utah.  Guess time will tell.  California looked solid and deserving of their number 10 rank after they picked apart maryland, they moved up from number 12.

Taking the number 11 spot was LSU who beat Washington, I am not totally sold on LSU yet this year.  One reason being that they are in the SEC and two being their defense looked mediocre at best against Washington.  They did not change rank from last week.  Number 12 ranked Boise State is the another team to move up on the Top 25 from #14 to 12 when they narrowly beat Oregon on the blue field and the Broncos extended their home winning streak to 20 games.  Now on to the team that makes me happy to see them down here.  Oklahoma fell from grace when they dropped on the polls from 3 to 13.  I truly hope that they dont manage to run the table and somehow make it back into the good graces of the pollsters like they did last year.  If anyone knows me they know that I always smile when OU loses and this past weekend was no exception.  Now I will give credit where credit is due, if OU managed to beat BYU with only their backup QB in then I would have to give some kudos to them.  That is not the case though and I am a happy man for this week at least.  Moving on, the Virginia Tech Hokies dropped from 7 to 14 after coming up short against the elusive Nick Saban.  Personally I wouldnt have moved them that far down but its hard to gauge their loss against a team like Bama.  Number 15 is Georgia Tech I have to admit year in and out Ga Tech is always under my radar unless they make it to the ACC championship game.  They beat Jacksonville State 37-17  at home which isnt too mind blowing but seeing as how the ACC is the up and coming conference this year if they remain in the Top 25 that will be an accomplishment in itself.

TCU takes spot 16 moving up one from last week after being idle for week 1.  Utah is number 17 jumping up 2 spots after a convincing win against Utah state.  This should be somewhat of a rebuilding year for Utah in that I do not think they will go undefeated again, not to say they are not good but just not AS good as last year plus they wont have All-American Louie Sakoda to bail them out if they get in a pinch. Notre Dame and Jimmy Clausen let people know that Irish Football will be one to be reckoned with this year throwing 83.3% vs Nevada with 4 TD’s and no INT’s they take 18 up from 23 last week.  19 is North Carolina, yes the Tar Heels are in the top 25 and its not in Basketball.  Many people are talking that UNC has the ability to take the ACC, but after seeing the Florida St. vs Miami game I think that claim is still up in the air.  The ACC seems to have a lot of teams that are closely packed together when it comes to talent and speed.  On to another ACC contender, Miami held off Florida St. to win its season opener.  They are fast and hard hitting, but their defense still showed to have some holes in its secondary.  I would venture to say if you can get to the 2nd level of their defense than expect big yards, but make sure you do it through the air because their big men are lethal they show up at number 20 after not being ranked last week .

One team that I strongly believe should have been dumped from the Top 25 and would have been if they didn’t start off with a Top 10 preseason rank is the next team that took #21 in the poll, University of Georgia.  They are not great, on both sides of the ball they don’t seem to have anything in sync.  Sure they laid some good hits to Des Bryant but hits to give you points and 30+ yard throws when Des Bryant beats your entire secondary to make a jumping catch in the endzone do.  By the end of the season they will be no where in site for even the SEC championship run.  Another Big 12 up and comer is Nebraska which might prove they have what it takes to meet my Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship this year, they moved up from 24 to 22 after a convincing win against Florida Atlantic.  Number 23 are the Bear cats of Cincinnati made their first appearance to the Top 25 this year after totally owning Rutgers on the road.  The last Big 12 team to make it to the Top 25 is the Kansas Jayhawks who had an entertaining opener against Northern Colorado by lighting up the scoreboard and left with a final of 49-3, seems Mark Mangino and Todd Reesing are not ready to fall back into the crowd yet.  They were up one from last week.  Finally, rounding out the Top 25 is Mizzu, the Tigers did great against Illinois winning in proper fashion 37-9.  If I am correct that shows the following

Conference breakdown of teams in the Top 25

Big 12 – 6

SEC – 5

ACC – 4

Moutain West – 3

Big 10 – 2

Pac 10 – 2

WAC – 1

Big East – 1

Independent – 1

Needless to say I am very excited about the Big 12 this year.

  1. I think you’re right about Oklahoma State. I’m glad to see two Big 12 schools in the top 5, but prematurely ranking people too high happened last year and the conference lost credibility when teams that never should have been that high lost games that top-10 teams don’t lose. Oklahoma State is a solid team, but without a good defense, they’re bound to lose some games they should probably win. They’re ranked way too high right now, and I’m afriad there’ll be a loss of confidence in the Big 12 across the board when they fall to a Baylor or a Texas Tech (hypothetically).

    • I am not totally sold on Baylor, I want to believe that they are gonna be a powerhouse team that no one saw coming but I just cant make that leap of faith.

      • Oh, I’m not pimping Baylor at all with that comment. I’m in agreement with you. I’m just saying that someone in that vein will come along and beat Oklahoma State in a game that OSU probably should have won easily. Happens every year. Sadly, it happened last year in the Holiday Bowl. I hope they work that monkey off their back before the postseason this time around.
