Week 5 Picks Recap

with 3 comments

The upsets caught both of us off guard, but we split on the only two picks where we differed.  I got hit for picking Georgia over LSU, and Jon’s “Lee Corso pick” backfired on him as Ole Miss took down Vanderbilt.  So, we remain three games apart.

Week 5 pick results

Austin:  12-4

Jon:  12-4

Season results

Austin:  66-16

Jon:  63-19

  1. Check this out:

I’m not sure what’s more amazing, that Bob Stoops is only 4-8 in games decided by three points or fewer in his 11 seasons at Oklahoma or that he has had only 12 games out of 137 decided by no more than a field goal. Pete Carroll is only 5-8 in three-point games at USC. Maybe dominant coaches struggle in close games? Then I looked at Mack Brown. He’s 17-3 in three-point games at Texas and has won his last 14 dating to the 2001 Big 12 Championship Game. Wow.

    • Good stuff, Travis. Thanks. Big Game Bob is becoming a big-time embarrassment for the Big 12. He’s 1-6 in his last seven games against ranked, non-conference opponents going all the way back to the 2005 Holiday Bowl against Oregon. Since OU won that game, the only ranked, non-conference opponent they’ve defeated is TCU last year. That includes three BCS Bowl losses, one of which was the championship. Stoops’ time is definitely passing. He’s regressed into what Mack Brown was in the pre-Vince Young days: a coach who’ll get you lots of wins but struggles in the big games.
